The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has extended best wishes to all Guyanese and in particular to African Guyanese countrymen on “this Freedom Day celebration.”
“Our country has a glorious history of struggle and sacrifice against oppression for freedom and this history has its origins in the tremendous resistance of African Guyanese forebears against slavery,” the PPP noted in its Emancipation Day Message.
That tradition of struggle inspired the fight against indentureship, and for independence and for democracy, the ruling party said.
And today while “we reflect on the great achievements that we have made in the quest for freedom, we must take courage and inspiration from that period to meet the present and future challenges,” the PPP said, adding that “the struggle for greater freedoms now lies in the economic sphere.”
The PPP also called for the building of solidarity with the peoples in the region and in the Third World generally since “we are facing many challenges caused by the unequal economic relations between the developed and the developing world.”
This has been further aggravated by the international financial and economic crisis that began in the developed world, the PPP added.
It also said that Guyanese can overcome the many challenges, assuring that “we can do it because of the tremendous history that our African Guyanese compatriots started.”
