A man-of-the-match performance from the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) captain, Leon Johnson, helped spur his team to an inaugural tournament victory in the Steven Jacobs-Delvon Mewan/Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) organized Carib Beer Super 6s Competition at the MSC Ground, yesterday.
Johnson contributed a total of 28 runs and captured two wickets to earn himself the man-of-the-match and best bowler awards.
GCC won the toss and batted first against the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) in the final posting a score of 60 – 5 in their five overs.
Johnson was supported by a sterling innings of 20 from Treon Forde as Maxwell Fraser grabbed one wicket for the opposition.
In reply, GNIC were restricted to 51 – 4 with Fraser (16) top scoring.
David Dick (14) was the only other batsman to reach double figures against the miserly attack that was led by Johnson.
In the final over GNIC needed 16 runs for victory but had no chance of reaching the target after the first four balls of the over went for just one run.
In the semi-final round GCC and GNIC defeated Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and the Demerara Sports Club (DCC) respectively.
GCC reached the target of 70 for the loss of just three wickets set by MSC who made 69-4 in their allotted overs.
Forde top scored with 35 and Johnson assisted with 16 runs in GCC’s run chase while Steven Jacobs made the only half century of the tournament (52) in vain for Malteenoes. Jacobs was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament after accumulating a total of 89 runs.
In the DCC/GNIC semi-final battle, Shae Gittens (26) and Dick (15) helped GNIC up to 65 – 5 in the first innings as Dennis Squires and Derwin Christian took one wicket each for the eventual losers.
DCC struggled to 29 – 5 with Squires top scoring with 17 as Fraser grabbed two important wickets for GNIC.
The first round matches saw Transport SC losing to DCC; Malteenos crushing the Combined team; GNIC trouncing the Super Stars and GCC sinking the Police team.
