A bumper crowd is expected to throng the Port Mourant Turf Club in Corentyne Berbice today when that entity stages its annual one-day Emancipation horse-race meet.
Over three million dollars in cash and other incentives have been put up by the organisers for the seven-event meet which is expected to be exciting.
More than 60 of the country’s top race horses will participate for the hefty prizes on offer.
The feature event, the `B’ & Lower race will see the winner taking away $300,000 and trophy compliments of the organisers.
Miss Republic, Jumbo Joy, Tropical Passion, The Message, Delmur Gold and Laura Lee In Flight, will highlight a star-studded field that will battle against the American invasion of Day Light Reprise, Illogical, Annie’s Play Mate and Irish Gel. The three-year- olds will compete over a mile for a top prize of $220,000.
Top horse, La Bayamosa, of the Jagdeo Stables, returns to the competitive arena after a long lay off and will be severely tested by the likes of Royal Champion, Lady of My Dreams and Prixie Fire along with new imports Marcus Star and Zip Adoo Dedah running out of the Jumbo Jet stables.
The two-year-old Open gallop will be contested over five furlongs with the winning money being $200,000.
Zionata of the Jumbo Jet Stable will be looking for another victory among the newcomers but will first have to overcome the likes of Peaceful, Gems Pride, War Path, Miracle Silver, Miss Bounty, Monalisa, Baby Girl and Celebration Time.
The `F’ and Lower horses will compete for a first prize of $180,000, over a distance of six furlongs.
Among those in the running to “pinch” the first prize are Pinch the Cash, The Message, the Gap, Alphabet, Finishing Touch, Face D Music, World Class and Prospectors Pride.
The ‘I’ and Lower winning prize is $120,000 and the horses will compete over seven furlong while the J, K, and L horses are down to compete for a purse of $100,000 over six furlongs.
In the ‘I’ maiden three-years old and above category, the horses will battle for the first prize of $100,000 over a distance of five furlongs.
Among other animals expected to enter the starting gates are Casino Royal, Fire Power, Matarazzi, Strike D Fire, New World and Foolish Pleasure.
The champion jockey and runner-up along with the top trainer will all receive trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market.
The top two jockeys will also receive monetary rewards of $10,000 and $5,000 respectively compliments of the organisers.
