A salesman and a porter were yesterday charged with giving false information to the police regarding a robbery and were granted bail when they appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
Marvin Rodrigues, 28, a driver and salesman of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Surendra Ramchandra, 23, a porter of Cornelia Ida Squatting Area, both denied the charge of giving false information and were granted bail in the sum of $75,000 each by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
It is alleged that last Thursday at the Vreed-en-Hoop police station, the duo gave false information to Corporal Gurdyal, a public officer, intending thereby to cause the said Corporal Gurdyal and other ranks to conduct an investigation, which they would not have conducted had they known the true state of the facts. Both defendants work with Fidelity Investments and reports are that they had alleged that they were robbed at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara on Thursday. However, subsequent investigations by the police led to the charges being laid.
In bail applications, the defendants’ attorney told the court that Rodrigues was a married father of two, while Ramchandra was a father of one. They were each granted bail in the sum of $75,000 and will have to return to court today at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
