The inaugural Al Sport & Tour Promotions and Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) Windball Development Programme came to a successful conclusion yesterday at the GTU ground, Woolford Avenue.
The five-day encampment programme at the GTU Building which commenced on July 30 had a total of 27 female participants from around the country.
A final squad of 20 will be selected to compete in the third annual International 20/20 Goodwill Series.
Guyana are the defending champions.
Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) are the only two countries that have been involved in the competition since its inception.
The defending champions have hosted the competition for the past two years winning on both occasions.
This year’s competition is scheduled to be held in the twin-island republic from August 15 – 20.
A total of five 20/20 matches are played to decide the victor and so far T&T have not claimed a single victory against their opponents, losing 5 – 0 in the two previous competitions.
Participants were chosen from the recently-concluded windball tournaments from around the country. President of the Al Sport & Tour Promotions, Alistair Munroe, stated that the selection of players was not based only on their on-field performance but their academic progress also.
During the five days the 27 players were under the close watch of head coach Edward Cobenna and assistant coach Basil Persaud with assistance from Paula Perriera, Francine Nichols and Kemisha Headly.
The team is looking for assistance from the government and corporate Guyana to help make their participation assured.
