KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Although dethroned as TCL Group West Indies One-Day Trophy Under-19 champions, Trinidad and Tobago ended the tournament on a triumphant note yesterday when they thrashed Guyana by six wickets with more than 19 overs to spare. T&T bowled out Guyana for 131 off 46 overs in their final-round fixture at the Elletson Road Police Ground and then replied with 133 for four off 30.3 overs. By reeling off their fourth consecutive win, T&T finished in the runner-up position with 16 points, while Jamaica played unbeaten in the tournament to tally maximum 20 points.
T&T executed another fine all-round performance to exact revenge on the Guyanese, who had critically denied them first innings points in their drawn three-day championship match last week, depriving T&T of the prestigious title.
Choosing to take first strike after winning the toss, the Guyanese gave a listless batting performance against the well organised T&T bowling attack.
Only No.5 batsman Seon Hetmyer, with an unbeaten 37, and Royston Alkins (33) offered resistance against the penetrative T&T bowlers.Hetmyer faced 95 balls and did not score a boundary during his stay at the crease, while Alkins stroked his 33 off 52 balls, with two fours and two sixes. Leading bowler for T&T was batting all-rounder Yannic Cariah, who bagged three for 23 off 10 overs. He received good support from left-arm spinners Yannick Ottley (2-15) and Sachin Boodram, who recorded amazing figures of two for four off nine overs with five maidens.For his tremendous bowling feat, Boodram copped the ‘Player of the Match’ award. In response, T&T raced to their target with 19 overs and three balls to spare. The consistent Nicholas Alexis made a stroke-filled 45 off 85 balls with five fours and a six, while captain Ottley contributed an unbeaten 31 for T&T, who had lost their first-round match to Jamaica.
Opener Aaron Alfred scored 27 while pacer Keon Joseph (2-20) led Guyana’s bowling.
