MIAMI, Florida, CMC – Top Jamaica female sprinter Veronica Campbell –Brown is upbeat about her chances at the World Championships, despite a couple of injury setbacks early in the season.
The reigning Olympic 200 metres and World Championships 100 metres champion suffered a severe muscle cramp competing in Athens last month which disrupted her preparation.
She backed herself to be ready for the World Championships, however, which run off from August 15 in Berlin.
“I traveled to my training base in Greece in early July and had my first competition on the continent on July 13th in Athens,” Campbell-Brown said in her IAAF diary.
“It was in Athens of course that I had won my first Olympic gold medal. This time it was the 100m that I won in a season best (10.96 seconds), however, approximately five metres from the end, I experienced a severe muscle cramp.
“Unfortunately, this injury ruled me out of my next scheduled competition in Rethymno. I must say, however, that I was also fortunate as my doctor was on location in both Athens and Rethymno and his excellent work got me back up and running by the time we got to Barcelona.
“I know my fans are worried about my pre-Berlin preparations as I have twice had injury setbacks, however, that is part and parcel of our wonderful sport so I have to press on. I have had great medical care and I remain in a positive mental frame.”
Campbell-Brown was one of the stars of last year’s Beijing Olympics, running the fastest time in a decade to win the 200 metres in 21.74 seconds.
The 27-year-old’s victory meant a successful defence of the Olympic title she won in Athens in 2004.
Campbell-Brown will enter Berlin looking to also defend the World Championship title she won in Osaka.
