Lindener Rudolph Mitchell won back-to-back races over the week-end to move to within four wins of a record 100 consecutive race walk title triumphs.
Yesterday the evergreen Mitchell won a six-lap walk race organized by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) at the National Park.
On Saturday Mitchell turned back a strong field to win the Forbes Burnham Memorial race walk event from the National Cultural Centre to the Seven Ponds in the Botanical gardens.
Mitchell won yesterday’s event in a time of 46:06s while Jonathan Fagundes finished second in a time of 50:55s.
Maurice Fagundes, Jonathan’s father placed third.
Regular walk race competitor Donna Ramkissoon placed fourth in the early morning competition.
The race was held in memory of late Guyanese journalist Clarence Kirton and was sponsored by the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) and the National Sports Commission.
Mitchell will hope that he can get a step closer to the triple figure win when he takes part in the Clash of the Champions Walk Race scheduled for Sunday in Linden.
The CSTC in their bid to promote healthier lifestyles said it hoped to see more young persons participate in their events.
Interested race walkers are asked to meet at Parliament Building on Hadfield Street at 5:00am on Sunday if they wish to participate in Sunday’s event. (Tiadi Blair)
