CROYDON, England, CMC – Barbadian ex-Test pacer Pedro Collins and South African Andre Nel were the standout bowlers for Surrey as their County Championship Division Two match ended yesterday.
Set a testing target of 349, Derbyshire finished on 232 for five with Nel and Collins sharing three wickets at Whitgift School Grounds.
Wayne Marsden stroked an unbeaten 108, with 14 boundaries and Greg Smith (49) was the next highest scorer, while the Jamaican Wavell Hinds went cheaply for eight. Nel picked up two for 28 of 13 overs and Collins delivered stifling figures of one for 21 off 11 overs.
Electing to bat, Surrey had compiled 362 all out with Michael Brown (120) and veteran Mark Ramprakash (80) leading the way against South African pacer Tim Groenewald, who claimed six for 50 off 24.1 overs.
Surrey secured the first innings advantage when they bowled out Derbyshire for 334 in their first innings with Nel claiming four for 83, Collins three for 76, and South African pacer Jade Dernbach, three for 73.
Ramprakash then stroked 134 not out to steer Surrey to a solid second-innings score of 320 for four declared and set Derbyshire the target they failed to reach.
