Alonzo `Zo’ Greaves powered his way to yet another mainstream victory when he took home the feature 25-lap event at the Roraima Bikers Club, Kashif and Shanghai organised cycle meet in Linden yesterday.
Scores of spectators turned out in the Amelia’s Ward community to witness an exciting day of racing and the local cycling stars did not fail to deliver.
The 25-lap race was the marquee event of the day featuring all of the country’s best but after the first two laps cycling enthusiast were already making predictions that it would be Greaves or the young Daniel Ramchurjee who would take the checkered flag.
Hometown hero, Andrew Reece, who was flown in from Anguilla by the organisers to add some more flavour to the race was kept at bay in the ‘big bunch’ which had the likes of Warren ‘40’ McKay, Robin Persaud and Junior Niles.
However, Greaves and Ramchurjee seemed to have carefully orchestrated their tactics for the race as the two calmly shared the sprint primes.
No pressure whatsoever was given to the two riders who had nothing less than a 27-second lead on the others as of lap four up until the final two laps.
But even though they were together throughout the race, when the bell sounded for the last lap, Greaves got up on his saddle and the rest was history.
He used his experience, power and speed to outsprint Ramchurjee as the two finished quite a distance from the other riders.
McKay finished third in what turned out be a daring sprint at the end to see who would finish in the top six.
Robin Persaud was fourth, followed by Christopher Holder and Reece.
Meanwhile, in the other events ridden on the day, Ramchurjee claimed first place in the junior and juvenile race ahead of Lindeners Rastaf Oselmo and Mike Nelson while Mark Lewis prevailed in the category thee and four event, ahead of O’Neil Hinds and Andrew Persaud.
McKay’s only win of the day came in the category one and two race where he overpowered Greaves and Robin Persaud.
The veterans certainly were not going to be left out of all the action as Eon Jackson stormed to victory in the 50 years old and under event ahead of Jolyon Joseph and Junior Niles.
In the 50 years old and over race, Monty Parris came in before R. Wong and Walter Isaacs respectively while Marcia Dick of Berbice made sure that the voyage to the Mining Town was not in vain as she dominated the field in the women’s event ahead of Azine Bennett of Linden.
In the end, the day was marked as a success by the organisers who stated that they were overwhelmed with the support shown by the Linden community and persons from other regions as well.
It was the second time that the Roraima Bikers Club and the Kashif and Shanghai organization have linked up to stage an event in the Amelia’s Ward area and they have promised to do so steadily in the future.
