A 19-year-old, who allegedly stole just over $100,000 from the dwelling house of a man, was remanded to prison when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Jamal Aaron pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when it was read to him by Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that on the night of May 29 in Georgetown Aaron broke and entered the dwelling house of virtual complainant (VC) Hensley Allen and stole one DVD player valued $25,000; a $75,000 cellular phone and $6,000 cash.
Reports are that the VC lives in the lower flat of a two-storey building. On the night in question Allen secured his home and retired to bed. Several hours later the VC was awakened by a noise and upon investigation reportedly saw the accused jumping through an eastern window.
Allen, according to reports, immediately raised an alarm and pursued the accused who managed to escape. Aaron was later arrested by police but none of the stolen items were recovered.
Aaron, according to the prosecution is not a first offender. They objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence as reasons. The magistrate subsequently refused bail and the matter was transferred to Court Three for September 1.
