Caribbean singer Dave Martins joined with the Ministry of Agriculture to launch his song “Turn Back” which aims to encourage better community waste management practices.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the tune was launched at the LBI community centre ground, East Coast Demerara.
Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud lauded Martins for his initiative and noted that the song will help spread the message about the effects of climate change.
“The song is not imploring us to do sophisticated things, it’s just reinforcing what should be done to keep the surroundings clean,” Persaud said.
Meanwhile, Martins said he decided to write the song because he was tired of the eyesore of styrofoam, plastic and paper clogging the waterways. He said songs have proven to make the greatest impact when giving public messages.
GINA said after the launch Martins also interacted with residents, community workers and Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) officials. Funds have been allocated in this year’s budget to develop waste management plans for the NDCs and public awareness and community participation.
