The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) last Monday commenced a series of meetings with members of the Hindu, Muslim and Christian constituencies as well as with representatives of women, labour, the private sector, youth and civil society, a press release from the ERC said.
According to ERC Chairman Bishop Juan Edghill who chaired the meetings, the objectives were to get feedback from the stakeholders on the work of the commission and to inform them of current ERC projects, while listening to their concerns and seeing how best the ERC can assist in resolving these.
Meanwhile, Commissioners Cavil Duncan and John Willems made remarks at the meetings, the release noted.
The first meeting was held with 13 representatives of the Hindu community, nine representatives from the Muslim community and 12 women representatives while 20 persons participated in the Christian constituency meeting, 12 persons from youth organizations, 10 representatives of labour organizations, nine representatives of the private sector and 15 representatives of civil society.
During the interactions, several issues affecting the various groups were discussed and recommendations were made on how to resolve these issues, and these were recorded by the ERC and will be put into action, the release stated.
