A 28-year-old man disappeared at sea sometime between Monday and Tuesday night and four men are in custody as police investigate the matter.
It was the first time that Richard Sanchara called ‘Peter’ or ‘Pledge’ went to sea, relatives said from their Montrose, East Coast Demerara home yesterday. Sanchara, who was a vendor at the Stabroek Market, told his mother, Drupattie Sanchara, that he wanted to go to the sea and work, she told Stabroek News.
This newspaper was told that Sanchara and the four men left the shore on Saturday morning and ventured to a spot 17 miles off the mouth of the Demerara River. His brother-in-law, Anil, was among the crewmen. On Tuesday, relatives said, Anil called and said that Sanchara had disappeared. According to them, Anil related that they had all been chatting on Monday night and then went to sleep. Sanchara woke up once to urinate, he said. The man told relatives that when they woke up at 4:30 am, Sanchara was not there.
They searched but after not finding anything, they returned and reported the matter to the Ruimveldt Police station. They were taken into custody and remained there up to yesterday afternoon.
Relatives related that police said that the Coast Guard was notified but they were not sure if a search was carried out by the officials.
