The West Coast Demerara couple whose relationship ended tragically in an apparent murder/suicide both died as a result of asphyxiation, reliable sources have informed this newspaper.
The source said heavy duty PVC paste was stuck in the trachea and oesophagus of 30-year-old Kathleen Mo-A-Lin. Marks were also visible around the woman’s neck which suggests something was tied around it.
Alfred Etwaroo died of compressed injuries to the neck. However it was concluded that though the man may have taken a poisonous substance, it was not the main cause of his death.
Relatives of the woman have revealed that they intend to cremate her body today. The man’s relatives have refused to reveal any such information saying that media reports have carried the wrong impression of him.
His niece Sunita Etwaroo told Stabroek News that her uncle had endured years of infidelity and control at the hands of his wife and her family.
She said they had moved to the house at Parfait Harmonie because he had become fed up with taunts and ill-treatment from her relatives.
According to her, on the morning of the ordeal, relatives were told that Etwaroo may have killed his wife and then taken his children for a morning stroll.
She said when he returned he left the children in the yard to play while he ventured upstairs and then took his own life.
Not knowing what had taken place, one of the children went upstairs and saw what had occurred and alerted neighbours.
When Stabroek News arrived at the couple’s home on Saturday morning a clear view from an eastern side widow of the incomplete house showed Etwaroo’s head hanging down and connected by a piece of cloth from the ceiling.
This couple’s relationship was not spared of years of abuse, threats and isolation from relatives.
Relatives recounted Etwaroo throwing accusations at his wife for many years, of cheating. For this, he kept her away from relatives and prevented her from going any where.
Relatives have since asked for the police to use this incident as an eye-opener and help women in this situation.
