A $95M contract was yesterday sealed for the construction of a dormitory at Liliendaal for hinterland scholars.
A release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that the contract was awarded to C. Dookie and Sons Contracting Services. The contract was signed by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Nigel Dharamlall, oversight engineer, Walter Willis and a representative of the firm.
GINA said that the 13,260 square-foot dormitory will house around 160 students and will be equipped with a library, auditorium, laundry, kitchen and living quarters. Provision will also be made to accommodate two house parents.
According to GINA, the project is expected to be completed before September next year.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, who witnessed the signing, said that the ministry was in the process of designing a proposal for the furnishings and fencing at a cost of $10.7M. The hinterland scholarship programme which started in 1962 is executed by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
