The driver of the pick up which collided with a couple at Garden of Eden, killing them on Sunday night, had been drinking heavily, according to police.
Police said last night that the driver, Christopher Evans, was examined and found to have an excessive amount of alcohol in his body which was above the stipulated requirement.
Evans remains in custody and charges are expected to be laid shortly as investigations continue, a police release said.
Albert Pearson, 59 and his wife, Marlyn Alecia Pearson, 62, both of Land of Canaan, EBD, were heading home after attending a christening at Grove, EBD, when the incident occurred sometime after 7 pm. The couple, who had been married for 38 years, died on the spot.
The pick-up which Evans was driving was reportedly racing at the time. Post mortem examinations are expected to be done tomorrow, relatives said.
Meanwhile police are continuing their investigations into the fatal accident at Tuschen also on Sunday. The driver of the vehicle, Mahendranauth Singh remains in custody.
At about 3:30pm on Sunday at the Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo public road, Amisha Alli, 10 and her cousin, Ricky Kumar, 12 were killed instantly after they were hit by a car driven by 21-year-old Singh of Industry Housing Scheme.
Singh drove away following the incident and was pursued by a police patrol and caught at the roadblock at the Den Amstel police station. The children had been heading to the mosque along with their grandmother and two other relatives. A post mortem examination is expected to be done tomorrow, relatives said yesterday.
