The Office of the President, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Ministries of Health, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport will benefit directly from a one-year stint by 14 Chinese Youth Volunteers who are skilled practitioners in various disciplines, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Representative of the Chinese Association of Youth Volunteers, Ding Ming, said that the volunteers are drawn from among Health, Economics, Physical Education, Culture, Education and Geography, and aim to continue the good work of their predecessors.
This second batch of youth volunteers was dispatched after a formal signing of the agreement on Monday at Ramphal House, Ministry of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation.
This batch follows another that was deployed to Guyana after an agreement between China and Guyana in 2007, signifying Guyana as the first beneficiary of volunteers from the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy, Zhang Jungao, explained that the 14 volunteers chosen to be deployed to Guyana are from among 700 volunteers who were trained.
According to GINA, Zhang pointed out that five are doctors and nurses who will serve at the Mackenzie Hospital; four are physical education teachers, one a martial arts coach; two are geological researchers who will serve at GGMC; and one or two economists will operate within the Office of the President.
Since 1992 Chinese doctors have been dispatched to Guyana biennially under the Guyana/China Medical Protocol and have served mainly at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and the Linden Hospital Complex. Professionals in other fields such as table tennis and martial arts since 2004 have trained Guyanese youths.
Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran, welcomed the batch of volunteers and lauded the very cordial relations the two states have enjoyed over the years. Dr Ramsaran recalled that on October 5, 2007, the exchange of notes for the deputation of volunteers was signed between the Governments of Guyana and China.
The minister noted that among those who will serve within the health sector are two practitioners in anaesthesiology and three nurses as personnel in the operating room.
