Jamaican women advance to cricket semis …after rain-affected match against Dominica

By Marlon Munroe
Match officials called off play at 3 pm yesterday after an inspection of the pitch and outfield because of post-lunch showers at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground in the WICB Senior Women’s Challenge 50-over tournament.

Umpires Clyde Duncan and Nigel Duguid upon inspection found that water had seeped onto the pitch after rain came minutes before Dominica should have taken to the field to reply to Jamaica’s score of 183 all out.

There were also pools of water on parts of the outfield.

This result means that Jamaica has emerged leader of Zone A going into the semi-finals tomorrow since they have won their other two matches against Barbados and St. Lucia. They wilal be playing the

runners-up from Zone B, Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) or St. Vincent and the Grenadines, both unbeaten with two games and who are scheduled to clash today at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground (GCC) to decide the winner of the group.

Jamaica recovered from early trouble to reach 183 all out from 46.5 overs against Dominica at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground.  Jamaica, at one time found themselves on the back foot reeling at 50-5 before a 69-run partnership between West Indies player Shanel Daley, who top scored with 41 (2×4), and wicketkeeper Tameeka Sanford (29).

Dominica won the toss and sent Jamaica to bat in overcast conditions and they lost their captain Herma Nathan-Dawes for 1 off the bowling of Bertina Berkett when the score was four. They soon lost Jodian Morgan lbw for nine by Ualr Delsole and Berkett struck again when she had Chedean Nation lbw for seven.

Desole then bowled Roshana Outar for 1 and Shanita Graham trapped Vanessa Watts lbw for four runs as Jamaica looked their most ragged throughout the tournament against a charged up Dominica side.

But the stylish Daly and the hard hitting Sanford consolidated with easy running and the occasional boundary.

Dominica, after initial discipline in their bowling, gave away 54 extras with 50 of those being wides. Berkett remained calm as she bowled economically, snaring three wickets for 18 runs from 10 overs, the last one being Sanford when she was bowled for 29.

Shortly after Chinelle Henry was run out for three and another partnership ensued with Abbie-Gaye Hendricks who made 16. Daley, trying to up the tempo, was caught by Annette John for a well played 41 that featured two boundaries.

Karla Cohen played a late order cameo to end unbeaten on 18. Desole and Annica Benjamin finished with figures of 2-17 and 2-38 respectively while Graham and John ended with one wicket apiece.

In the other game played over at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground, St. Lucia made 128 all out with Maria David scoring 41 and Pamela Alfred contributing 34. Barbados’ Shaquana Quintyne and Charlene Taitt had figures of 3-26 and 3-28 from 10 overs respectively while Danielle Small took two wickets for 23 runs from 10 overs.

Barbados in reply were required to make 72 runs off 20 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis system due to post-lunch showers that held up play for more than two hours. They reached 72-5 off 18.5 overs with Pamela Lavine, the tournament’s only centurion, scoring 18 and Deandra Dottin making 22.

Yasmine St. Ange was the top bowler with figures of 2-10 from three overs.

T&T, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica and Barbados will be the teams contesting the semi-finals to be played tomorrow while the final will be played on Sunday.

Today Guyana will be in action against Grenada while T&T will clash with St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground.
