The Scotts School ground comes alive today with the first round of the Berbice Football Association (BFA) Business School-Berbice Football Championship kicking off with four matches, following the official launching yesterday.
The sponsor, Berbice branch location Principal Ian Carter, did the handing over of trophies and prizes on behalf of the school to the BFA Secretary Joseph Simon at the branch in the ancient county on Pope Street, New Amsterdam.
Action kicks off at 10am with Scottsburg United clashing with Rosignol United in the first match then Hearts of Oak will go head to head with Mahaicony United at noon while Barzilla and N/A United are to take on Real Union and Monedderlust at 2pm and 4pm respectively.
James Bovell, an ardent football supporter, said that the idea behind this tournament is to give back to the community as well as to help to promote the development of sports in a way that will be beneficial to the youths. He also stated that this will keep them meaningfully occupied and away from the many negative influences currently plaguing society.
The BFA gratefully acknowledged this tournament as being both a timely and worthwhile contribution towards enhancing the development of the youths in football.
At the conclusion of the tournament, trophies and medals will be awarded to the three top teams while a special individual prize, the Most Disciplined Player, will be a scholarship to attend the Business School, compliments of the school’s Director, Bovell, who believes that sports must be a part of the education process.
