Hockey returns to Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) after decades as several matches in the 2009 John Fernandes Insurance sponsored second-division men’s hockey tournament will be played at the famous Queenstown venue.
The youthful Hikers and Old Fort teams will square off at DCC as the two-round competition will bully off this afternoon with two matches.
The other fixture will pit the experienced Carib Degenerates against Western Dragons of West Demerara at Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda.
Five teams, Hikers, Degenerates, Western Dragons, Old Fort and GCC will battle for top honours in the tournament which is expected to be completed by September 24.
Secretary of the Guyana Hockey Board, Gregory Sills disclosed that matches will be played on Mondays and Fridays at the two venues.
Matches will be of 60 minutes duration and three points will be awarded for a win and one point for a draw.
DCC, famous for producing several top cricketers including former West Indies captain Clive
Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks, Roger Harper and Travis Dowlin once fielded a hockey team in the seventies and efforts have been made over the years to revive the sport in the club without success.
An official of the GHB said that a request was made to the executive of the DCC for the use of the ground and they consented.
The umpires for the Hikers/Old Fort clash are Kevin Spencer and Devin Hooper, while the officials in charge of the Dragons/ Degenerates showdown are Jerry Bell and Brian Asregado.
On Friday, GCC will go into action against Hikers at Bourda with the umpires being Jonathan Yearwood and Wayne St. Jules, while Dragons will face Old Fort at DCC with umpires being Shane Samuels and Rawl Davson.
