Fashion Weekend organisers deny KN’s shocking report

Organisers of the just-concluded Guyana Fashion Weekend 2009 have denied a report of an “almost electrocution” at the event published in the Kaieteur News.

20090825fashionone20090825fshiontwoAccording to the release from the organisers, the article referred to an incident that took place at the pool side of the Princess Buddy’s International Hotel, in preparation for the recently concluded Guyana Fashion Weekend.

They noted that there was no power cable in the pool, adding that the speaker wire went from the amplifier to the speaker. “Therefore there was absolutely no audio-wire in the pool,” the release stated. Further, it said the photograph that was featured in the news article was that of a flagpole attached to the hand rails of the pool-stairs.

The organisers explained that professional engineer Earl Thompson, who works for a utility company, was on site and confirmed that there was no electricity ‘on’ at the time. The release said he noted that every member of the hotel’s electrical staff was operating on the premises and confirmed that there was no electricity running at that time.
The release said the young man, Keon Blake, who was reported to have been almost electrocuted, suffered a static reaction.

Furthermore, it noted that he was wearing rubber sole sneakers, which is a neutralizer of electricity and immediately after the incident he walked around the pool, fully conscious before he got into a cab and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
