Alpha United returned to their usual dominant form when theycrushed the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the second round of the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League on Friday at the Tucville Playfield.
The three time defending champions hammered the opposition 6 – 0 in the first match of the double header that had the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team playing to a tough victory against BK International Western Tigers.
Alpha was led by a second half Shawn Bishop hat-trick which helped in the sinking of GFC who began to grow weary in the final 45 minutes of the battle.
GFC got off to a good start and held off Alpha in their conventional attacking period but Alpha still managed to get an opportunity to score and went ahead through an Anthony Harding strike in the 32nd minute.
At the resumption of the second half, GFC needed the equalizer but Alpha went into over drive and began the dismantling of their opposition as Bishop made it 2 – 0 in the 55th minute for his team.
Not long after, GFC were down by four goals when Dwight Peters and Elso Dias found the back of the net in the 75th and 78th minutes respectively.
Bishop then found an opening in the 80th minute and another in the final minute to score before the regulation time whistle taking his team’s toll to six.
In the WT/GDF match, the Tigers displayed resolute defending throughout the 90 minutes and played some great offensive but were not able to finish on numerous occasions in the first half which should have given them the lead.
It was much of the same in the second half from the Tigers both offensively and defensively even though they got off some good shots on goal that were denied by the GDF keeper.
However, GDF with a few attacking passes near the goal, loosened up the defence and gave them the opportunity to find the decider in the 51st minute when Deon Brewley shot one past the custodian into the top of the net.
