Magistrate Priya Beharry on Friday ordered that a 17-year-old boy be kept in police custody shortly after he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly snatching a woman’s gold band.
The teen had pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny from the person which stated that he stole a gold band valued $55, 000 from Bibi Bacchus on August 25.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question, Bacchus was walking along the Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street, when the teen approached her, snatched her gold band and attempted to flee the scene.
They said that Bacchus raised an alarm and public-spirited citizens who were around at the time gave chase after the teen and later apprehended him. They then handed him over to the police who then conducted a search on his person and found the band.
He was then arrested and later charged.
The prosecution noted that the teen had a similar matter against him dismissed three weeks ago and that prior to that he had been incarcerated at the Grove police station for over three months.
The teen then said, “de person who steal she ting deh pun de road”.
The magistrate then entered a not guilty plea for the teen.
She then ordered that the teen be kept in police custody and that he make another court appearance on September 22.
