LONDON, England, CMC – Bahamian sprint veterans Chandra Sturrup and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie will join Jamaican Brigitte Foster-Hylton among top Caribbean names at today’s Aviva British Grand Prix.
In-form new IAAF World Champion Foster-Hylton will race in the 100-metre hurdles while Sturrup and Ferguson-McKenzie tackle the short sprints at Gateshead’s International Stadium. For the English fans, veteran Foster-Hylton’s clash with Britain’s newly-crowned young heptathlon World Champion Jessica Ennis is one of the main attractions at the meet, which holds Grand Prix status and is part of the IAAF World Athletics Tour 2009. Foster-Hylton clocked a fine 12.51 seconds to win her first global medal at the Berlin World Championship and last Friday she delivered a world leading 12.46 to win at the Zurich Golden League meeting.
Ferguson-McKenzie, a 200-metre bronze medallist in Berlin, faces the American Allyson Felix, who won the half-lap sprint in the German capital for her third World Championship title.
Ferguson-McKenzie will also race in the 100 metres against Sturrup, world bronze medallist Carmelita Jeter who won impressively in Zurich, and her American team-mate Lauryn Williams.
Tyson Gay headlines the men’s 100-metre field.
