A mother of six who accuses the police of planting cocaine and cannabis in her home and later charging her for narcotics offences was yesterday placed on bail in the sum of $50,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court.
Vanessa Chandler had pleaded not guilty to one charge of possession of narcotics and another of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. She denied that on August 24, at her West Coast Demerara home she had one gramme of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking. She also denied that on August 27, at her home, she had two grammes of cannabis in her possession.
However, her lawyer had told the court that another man had been charged for the narcotics but that the police linked him to Chandler and had charged her also.
The lawyer said that the narcotics were not found at his client’s home.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews then stated that the narcotics were indeed found at Chandler’s home since she had sold several plain clothes policemen the narcotics.
Chandler then stated that the police had visited her home in the wee hours of the morning and had knocked on her door. She said that when she opened it, they told her that they were looking for ammunition and drugs.
She went on to say that when the police had come up empty handed after the search, they took out the narcotics from their pockets and told her that they found it in her home.
The Magistrate subsequently granted Chandler bail and ordered that she return to court on September 17.
