-family unhappy with police probe
The octogenarian murdered last week in her La Grange, West Bank Demerara home was laid to rest yesterday.
Kharpattie Shivnauth died of suffocation, according to a post-mortem examination and several suspects have been questioned by the police.
When Stabroek News visited Shivnauth’s Lot 66 Independence Road, La Grange home yesterday, scores of mourners had turned out to attend her funeral service. Many were overwhelmed by the manner in which she met her end as they recounted the incident.
An angry Gopaul Shivnauth, the woman’s son with whom this newspaper spoke said in a tearful voice that his mother did not deserve to die the way she did. He was also furious over what he called the “careless way,” the police had been investigating the matter.
“Dem really ain’t doing nothing but me mother murder yuh know, all dey doing is running round, running round and wasting precious time,” Shivnauth said. The woman’s son is of the view that the police have taken the wrong people into custody while those responsible for the crime are still roaming the streets freely.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Kharpattie who lived alone had retired to bed on Friday last when a person or persons broke into her home. She was gagged and apparently beaten before being robbed and left to die.
Persons living in close proximity to the woman’s home said that they heard no sounds or suspected anything unusual during the period the old woman was being attacked. The incident is believed to have occurred between 11 pm and 1 am.
The woman is said to have been robbed of an undisclosed sum of money along with a quantity of jewellery.
