An 18-year-old girl died after being hit by a truck, which was reportedly speeding at Bartica yesterday.
Dead is Renata Marks, a cashier at the South End store in Bartica. She had moved to the mining community from Moruca just about a month ago. The woman at whose home she resided, Marcia, told Stabroek News that Marks had left the home at 7:15 am yesterday and had gone to the home of another salesgirl at the same store to pick her up. However, the girl was not yet ready and told Marks to go on ahead, the woman recalled.
A few houses away on Third Avenue, the incident occurred. She was hit from behind, Marcia said and the truck had just come out of the yard “at a speed”. Marks was taken to the Bartica Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. According to reports, the driver’s mother was instrumental in taking the girl to the hospital and the matter was reported to the police. Marks’ grandmother, Iris Benjamin said that she was in the city about to head back to the North West when she was informed of the incident. She travelled to Bartica yesterday afternoon. She said that up to late yesterday, they were unable to contact her granddaughter’s parents to inform them of the incident. Marks is also survived by her sister and four brothers. Police investigations are continuing.
