Fruta Conquerors recorded a victory against the Pele Football Club to stand firm at fourth on the points standing of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League at the Tucville Playfield on Wednesday.
Conquerors won a hard-fought battle against Pele which could have gone either way but the home team persevered a bit more on the night to go home with a 1 – 0 victory and added three points to their tally.
Both teams played an intriguing first half that had supporters at the edge of their seats as Pele stormed down on the opposition in the opening moments of the first half but without troubling the keeper.
The momentum in the match soon shifted and the Conquerors began commanding ball possession and heading towards goal. However, they were not successful in the first half because of the resolute defending from Pele’s back line.
At the resumption of the second half, it looked like it would be a completely different half with both sides gunning for first blood.
Conquerors had quite a few opportunities, as did Pele but the home side began getting numbers forward in search of the goal and finally nailed an opportunity from a free kick on the left flank near the corner post outside the 18-yard box.
It was a stunning kick which was finished by a clinical header from Manessah Primo in the 87th minute who had a torrid time trying to score in the encounter because he was short on support.
Meanwhile, second place occupants Sunburst Camptown with 25 points, were held in a tight game to a draw against Flamingo which is currently seventh in the standings with three points.
Camptown were caught lapsing and the Flamingo team who really looked determined on the night of reckoning capitalized and scored in the 19th minute through a Leon Yaw strike which gave them the lead for more than half of the match.
In the second half, Flamingo looked as if they were contented with their one goal and wanted to defend it for the remainder of the match which gave Camptown the way to search for the equalizer.
Just when shouts of ‘upset’ were barking around the ground, Camptown won a free kick on top of the 18-yard box which Rishawn Sandiford took and sunk in the back of the net in the 70th minute.
The action continues this evening with an exciting double header when the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) meets BK International Western Tigers in the opening match at 6 pm and Alpha United goes head to head with the Guyana Defence Force in the feature showdown at 8 pm.
