(Trinidad Guardian) Anthero Mootoo, the teenager found guilty of committing fraud in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) examinations, was on Thursday spared a fine or jail term. Instead, he was placed on probation by a San Fernando magistrate.
When the matter was called shortly after 11 am before Second Court Magistrate Melvin Daniel, Mootoo, represented by his attorney Michael Persadsingh, was ordered to report to a probation officer. The officer will, in turn, set the conditions surrounding Mootoo’s probation.
The former Presentation College student, who was dressed in grey shirt and brown pants, had a serious expression on his face as Daniel spoke. Mootoo,18, was convicted of having prior knowledge of the Mathematics Paper II examination. Testimonies in court had revealed that another student had offered to sell Mootoo the paper for TT$3,000.
However, he could not afford it and agreed to pay TT$500 for a copy. When the matter was last called on August 27, Daniel said he was satisfied that the State had proven its case against Mootoo but expressed concern at the level of dishonesty which he displayed.
