Dear Editor,
One of the first things I do in the mornings is read the Guyana newspapers online. Being Guyanese, I am interested in everything that is happening back home and I would like to commend you and your organization for a job well done. Your reporting team has shown true professionalism and competency when covering news and other events.
For a while now I have been reading only the Stabroek News (SN) and the Kaieteur News (KN), since I have long realized the Guyana Chronicle (GC) to be a propaganda news letter for the PPP/C. When you read the same stories in SN and KN they are differently reported from the ones in GC. The GC is not at all objective in its reporting; it always takes the side of the government. If anyone is in doubt, they should read the same news with regard to political events in all three papers and they will soon come to the same conclusion.
The recent crime wave that involved members of the police and the defence force is totally appalling. The ones that are supposed to protect the helpless people are the ones killing and stealing. Moreover, as I read about the two men who died in the Essequibo River accident, I couldn’t help but feel the pain of the relatives as they complain about not being helped by the police. It is totally disheartening as we think about this family and their grievances. The plea of the mother sums it all up too well and my heart goes out to her: “It is just too much fuh me a going and looking fuh he and dem police ent helping me is me and me family alone, I don’t know what to do no mo…”
The letter section has also been attracting truly concerned Guyanese both local and overseas-based. SN along with KN has for long promoted openness, unlike the GC which operates as if it is in North Korea. There are some regulars who seem to know everything or are always unhappy about something. I can give a few examples, but there was a funny one the other day that had to do with teaching credentials and polls.
There are also staunch PPP, PNC, and AFC supporters contributing to this section. The PPP and PNC supporters can write all they want, but I personally don’t care for them because of their positions. Times have changed, and it is about time we hailed the AFC supporters. These are the real Guyanese with vision. I love to hear from them, because they represent change and the willingness to change. Thanks to the AFC for providing hope and thanks to these supporters who have seen the light and need for us to get away from the old dirty politics of the PPP and PNC. I particularly liked the letter from Mr Chris Vieira published in the KN on August 22, where he asked a very important question relating to some false allegation about a duty-free concession for Mr Ramjattan.
I hope the day will come when I can read about why the US revoked the visas of certain government officials, government’s links to Roger Khan and support for the AFC.
Yours faithfully,
M Jagmohan
