BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Assistant West Indies coach Henderson Springer says he is looking for the right attitude from his inexperienced charges on their upcoming ICC Champions Trophy tour.
The seasoned Barbadian coach, named as David Williams’ deputy for the September 22 to October 5 tournament, said this characteristic was the most important thing for the side at this stage of their careers.
“What I’m looking forward to as far as preparation and pride is concerned is the right attitude, the attitude to want to be there, to want to perform well and that this point in time given the makeup of the team that is what we have to do,” said Springer, who helped oversee the week-long preparation camp for the players at Kensington Oval last week.
West Indies left here Saturday evening for South Africa where they will spend two weeks preparing for their tough assignment.
The side is a makeshift one, missing most of the region’s leading players because of the contracts dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players Association.
They have been drawn in a tough Group A with Pakistan, India and Australia but Springer said he had high expectations for the group.
“I expect them not to disgrace themselves. One of my aims is to help the guys become better players over that period of time, than they were before they left,” he pointed out.
“That should be the priority. Winning would be a result of that. If we do win the competition it is as a result that the players are better with hard work.”
The former Barbados off-spinner, who served as the Windies assistant coach back in 2007 for the Zimbabwe and South Africa tours, said he was already impressed with what he had seen of the young unit.
“They are hungry. From the attitude and effort I have seen them put in over the last week, these guys want to be here and that is the start of becoming better and I think they will give a good account of themselves,” he noted.
