– Alpha ‘Hammer’ Camptown, Rosignol upset Victoria Kings
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) could not have asked for a better start to their ‘Super League’ as Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United whipped Sunburst Camptown 3-1 and Rosignol United edged East Coast power house Victoria Kings 2-1.
Playing at the world famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda on Sunday evening in front a fair sized crowd, things got underway with a ceremonial kick off by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and then it was down to business.
The four teams and the fans were all for a long time gearing to play in a tournament of this magnitude, and thanks to the WIN IN CONCACAF WITH CONCACAF programme the opportunity is here.
Known for their dominance of the sport at the senior level in Georgetown and Guyana to an extent, a battle ready Alpha United was unveiled like never before seen.
It seemed as though Alpha brought out a bigger hammer than usual as they slammed Camptown’s defense from the sound of referee Stanley Lancaster’s first burst of the fox 40.
National striker Dwight Peters opened the score sheet in the 8th minute and that signaled a busy night for the Sunburst-sponsored team custodian Richie Richards.
Alpha kept the pressure on with Peters, Edison Gomes and Dwain Jacobs pushing forward forcing Camptown to play a more defensive type football.
Gomes, however, was successful after several clear looks in the 31st minute and just when Camptown thought that they would bounce back, Alpha’s Abassi McPherson had another idea.
McPherson had always seemed threatening throughout the game and made his presence felt more in the 37th minute when he sent a bullet to Richards from way outside the 18-yard box which was too much for the keeper to even put a hand on.
At half time the scores were Alpha three, Camptown nil.
The second half didn’t speak much of Camptown as strikers Nigel ‘Powers’ Codgrington and Telson McKinnon found it difficult to manoeuver around Alpha’s defence which was marshaled by national caption Howard Lowe.
Things got more complicated for Camptown when they lost defender Orlando Gilgeous since he was given marching orders by referee Lancaster after he thought the player made a dangerous tackle against an Alpha player.
However Lance Ralston was able to salvage some pride for his side in the 8th minute but too late was the cry.
Meanwhile Victoria Kings after being given a go-ahead by Delroy Fraser in the 26th minute was outplayed by Rosignol United.
The team from the ancient county was down one nil going into the second half but they played with good composure and Winston Pompey equalized in the 68th minute before Cornel Taylor sealed the night ten minutes later.
The GFF Super League will continue on Sunday with a double header in Linden where Bakewell Topp XX will oppose Liquid Gold and Camptown will look to bounce back against Milerock United.
On the same day at Blairmont, Berbice from 16:00 hours there will be one game- Rosignol United versus Buxton United.
At Uitvlugt Alpha United are down to go head to head with Seawall FC from 16:00 hours and at the Georgetown Football Club ground (GFC) Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Victoria kings will collide.
