Old Fort continued their unbeaten run in the Farfan and Mendes second division men’s hockey league when they scored a hard-fought 3-2 win over Carib Degenerates yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda.
The Old Fort side who defeated GCC 3-0 in their recent encounter found the going tough against the more experienced Degenerates who struck first after applying early pressure.
Former national Under-21 player Brian Asregado scored with a reverse hit in the 7th minute of play as the Degenerates stamped their authority early in the match.
Old Fort however, equalized two minute later when Jason DeSantos converted a penalty corner.
Sheldon Cornette pushed the Degenerates further ahead when he scored in the 15th minute to give his team at 2-1 lead at half time.
Old Fort went on the offensive with DeSantos leading the charge and he struck his second goal in the 27th minute when his first time shot off a run of play evaded Degenerates kicker back Brian Cumberbatch in goal.
The winning goal came off the stick of Shamar Pemberton in the 37th minute although the Degenerates made a gallant effort to get back into the game.
The other fixture between Western Dragons and Hikers was scheduled for the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground but no scores were available up to press time.
The competition continues on Friday with two matches, Degenerates will collide with Hikers at Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground in Queenstown while GCC will go into action against Old Fort at Bourda.
