Dear Editor,
The residents of Strathspey, Area ‘G,’ East Coast Demerara have not been receiving water through their pipes since July 2009 and there seem to be no answers coming forth from the management of the GWI Melanie office. The current dry weather has further added to this distressing situation and to add insult to injury we have received water bills from GWI for the year 2009.
It should be noted that this water problem has existed since March 2007 and in August 2008 the authorities informed the residents that the GWI was undertaking a multi-million dollar project that would soon remedy the problem. This project saw the contractors of GWI digging up the roads to take out the old pipelines and laying new lines with new connections. However, this was as far as the delivery of the project went, since we only received water for a few weeks, after which it ceased. To date we are still awaiting precious and much needed water to flow through our pipes.
Recently I continued to make calls to the GWI Melanie office to report this issue and to inquire as to when we will probably have this situation corrected. The current manager represented that GWI is currently executing another big project that will see the residents of Strathspey receiving full pressured water through their pipes by December 2009.
Editor, could someone, maybe the Minister look into this situation and give some answers as to what really is being done with respect to these various ‘projects’ that are undertaken, since to date there has not been any tangible delivery of water through the lines to the end users? Secondly, could GWI be more transparent and communicate to residents what really is the problem and not just take your telephone number and complaints? Thirdly, since we have not being receiving water through our pipes do we have to pay for a service that we were not privileged to receive?
Finally, our wish and prayer is that this letter will activate the relevant authorities to take the necessary action and that we receive the much needed water through our pipes as early as possible.
Yours faithfully,
R Rampersaud
