It seems as though Guyana’s heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers has finally found an opponent who is not worried about his hard hitting ability and more so his size.
The towering Mitchell has only fought once since winning the national title in 2007 because the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and promoters are hard pressed to find persons who are not fearful of stepping into the ring against him and for a ‘reasonable’ sum.
However, Dexter ‘Gold Teeth’ Collins plainly told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he believes he has what it takes to beat Rogers.
“I’m here to finish off Rogers once and for all. I want to knockout all of his gold teeth because I am the original ‘Gold Teeth’.
I aint know who he is thinking that nobody could beat he, well I gon show everybody that I can knock he out and plus knock out all he gold teeth,” Collins boasted.
This would be his first outing professionally after fighting at the amateur level in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) with a record of seven wins from ten fights and three losses.
Rogers and Collins will appear as one of the undercards for the September 26 ‘Caribbean Fury’ boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall where Shondel Alfred is down to meet Corrine De Groot for the vacant WIBA bantamweight title.
Meanwhile Raddison Suites and the National Communication Network (NCN) yesterday announced their affiliation to the card which according to co-promoter Carwyn Holland would be televised around the Caribbean.
Raddison Suites located in Queenstown will house De Groot and her entourage while NCN will handle the broadcasting of the bouts.
“We are always happy to be associated with the GABBC and even happier to be a part of this fight since it is a world title card. We always try to do our part in promoting sports and I’m sure this would be very successful,” said Christine Haynes, Marketing Manager of Raddison Suites.
President of the GBBC Peter Abdool lauded the two companies for their assistance.
