Two police officers were rushed to the public hospital yesterday nursing injuries after the motorcycle they were travelling on crashed into the rear of a minibus at Prince’s Street.
The policemen were thrown off the bike upon impact and ended up in the drain separating Le Repentir Cemetery and Prince’s Street. One of the officers reportedly hit the drain head first and injured his neck. At the hospital, he was heard crying out for a severe pain in his neck.
Information on the officers, including the extent of the injuries the men suffered was not immediately available yesterday. But it was some time around 11 am when the accident occurred. Reports are that the minibus was on Prince’s Street proceeding to turn into Haley Street with the police officers travelling behind slammed into its rear. The minibus was said to have been transporting a few passengers at the time, none of whom were injured reports said.
People at the scene described the accident as “freaky”, saying the officers made a sudden swing into the bus and were immediately thrown off the bike. The officers and the motorbike all ended up in the drain where a few wooden boards had been placed. It was reported that the officer with the neck injury hit his head on the boards.
“Even the police gat to watch wey they going,” a man said at the hospital after the officers were rushed into the Accident and Emergency Unit.
Police ranks gathered at the hospital to lend support to their injured colleagues yesterday expressed shock. Some called the turn at Prince’s and Haley streets “a bit tricky”, while others observed that the officers could have been more cautious.
