NEW YORK, (Reuters) – Serena Williams was fined $10,500 by officials at the U.S. Open for her angry outburst during her semi-final defeat by Kim Clijsters on Saturday.
The American was penalised on match point down for her expletive laced tirade directed at a lineswoman who had called her for a foot fault. The point penalty ended the match.
“The maximum permissible on site fine of $10,000 has been levied for unsportsmanlike condct against Serena Williams for her on court behaviour during the women’s semi-final,” tournament officials said in a statement yesterday.
“Ms Williams also will be fined $500 for racket abuse which took place at the end of the first set of the same match.”
