Rosignol United won their second game in as many matches while Liquid Gold of Bartica pulled off an upset in Linden when the inaugural Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League continued Sunday with five matches at four different venues across the country.
Rosignol United defeated Buxton United (2-0).
Playing at the Blairmont Community Centre in front a fair sized crowd, Rosignol United, who after staging an opening night upset were called the ‘Black Horse’ of the tournament, continued that trend after disposing of Buxton United two goals to nil.
Gladwin Johnson opened the scoring in the 30th minute while Rawl Scott sealed the deal in the 51st minute to hand his side the distinction of being the only undefeated team in the league after two matches.
Victoria Kings defeated GDF (1-0)
At the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Victoria Kings bounced back from their opening night shocker to Rosignol United and narrowly edged the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) – one nil.
After playing the first half goalless, Orin Elias in the 87th minute netted the winner for the Kings who now have one win from two matches.
Alpha United v Seawall United (1-1).
Over on the West Coast of Demerara, Seawall United were able to pull off an upsetting single draw (1-1) with powerhouse Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United at the Uitvlugt Community Centre.
The city’s top side always seemed threatening but finding the back of the net was a problem which their strikers just couldn’t fix.
However, in the 24th minute, Anthony Harding sent them up one and it visibly changed the pace of the game as Seawall United were forced to play on the defensive.
But the west side team went after every opportunity and it paid off in the closing minutes of the game when Alpha’s defender Kelvin McKenzie hands the ball in the penalty area.
Ike Garraway made no mistake in beating custodian Ronson Williams to give his side the much needed draw and soured Alpha’s chances of going two and ‘o’ after their devastating win over Sunburst Camptown when the event opened last weekend.
Camptown v Milerock United (1-1)
Meanwhile for the Continental agency sponsored team, they were able to dramatically pull off a morale-boosting draw against Milerock United at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.
The game was played at a hot pace from the get-go with referee Roy McArthur having a busy night since in the first minute Milerock lost their prime scorer when Ray Bobb- Semple was given marching orders for his unsportsmanlike play against Camptown’s goalie Richie Richards.
Having being reduced to ten men from the start of the game, Milerock never found the right combinations to penetrate the city team’s defence. Camptown on the other hand just like their opening night performance were dreary in their plays and during the first half, their striker, Nigel ‘Power’ Codgrington and Telson McKinnon were way out of tune.
Things took a turn in the 34th minute when Milerock defender Marlon Maximus took a free kick well outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the western goal and Richards apparently after taking the ball stepped over the goal line with the ball and assistant referee Franklyn Brisport raised his flag to signal a goal.
Players from both sides were stunned especially the Camptown players and were brought to reality when referee McArthur blew his whistle and pointed to the centre line.
In the meantime, the frustration of Camptown showed in the 34th minute when Telson McKinnon was caught throwing a vicious elbow to a Milerock player in the presence of the referee who issued a straight red card to the striker.
The first half ended one nil in favour of the home side but after a customary locker room pep talk and rejuvenation by some Sunburst orange juice, Camptown came out and played with purpose with national striker ‘Powers’ Codrington setting up the team’s play.
Codrington who entertained the enthusiastic crowd with his fancy footwork and deft passes set up Quacy La Flour for the equalizer in the 65th minute.
Liquid Gold defeated Bakewell Topp XX (1-0).
The opening game of the double header in the mining town was a shocker as the Barticians through former junior national player Whitney Welcome needled the decorated Bakewell Topp XX team one nil to register their first win in the tournament.
Little or nothing was known of Liquid Gold prior to their clash with one of the country’s top football clubs but after their terrific showing teams will now keep a close eye on them.
Both sides squandered clear goal chances but it was Welcome who was a substitute for Clint Kelman in the 63rd minute who made good use of his one and only look on goal after coming in the game.
The tournament will continue on Sunday with six matches being played at the MSC, Bartica, GFC and Plaisance grounds.
