Rudolph Mitchell was last Sunday honoured at a function held in Soesdyke to recognize his milestone of 100 consecutive victories in race walking.
Mitchell was hailed as Guyana’s new hero when he was recognized for his feat of 100 consecutive wins in the sport of race walking in the presence of Region Four Chairman Clement Corlette, Alliance for Change (AFC) General Secretary Sixtus Edwards and President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce.
Corlette, addressing the function organised by members of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), said that Mitchell should now go on to represent Guyana in the international arena and put it on the map for a new discipline.
“Mr. Mitchell’s dedication, commitment and hard work to the sport should be emulated by many Guyanese youths,” said Corlette.
He urged that the state and business community become more involved in the development and expansion of the sport.
He also directed comments at members of CSTC in urging that they too should help to keep the sport alive, adding that what Mitchell had achieved could not have been accomplished had it not been for the club.
Meanwhile Boyce said his association will do all in its power to ensure race walking is popularized because it is inexpensive and a respected discipline worldwide.
At the ceremony Mitchell in reply stated that he would continue to walk until he dies and would go all out to become a world class race walker.
The celebrations were later taken to Mitchell’s home town, Linden, where well wishers came out to congratulate him.
