The ‘Caribbean Fury’ boxing card scheduled for September 26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) attracted more corporate support with Guyana Oil Company (GUYOIL), Akbar Auto Sales and Nigel’s Supermarket joining the sponsorship bandwagon.
GUYOIL donated $200,000 which will go towards the main bout between Guyana’s bantamweight champion Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred and Corinne ‘Sexy Panther’ De Groot for the vacant Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight title. Akbar’s $100,000 donation and Nigel’s undisclosed sum will sponsor bouts in the undercard.
The contributions were made to president of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) Peter Abdool and owner of Holland’s Entertainment and promoter of the card Carwyn Holland who both expressed their gratitude for the contributions.
They noted that Nigel’s Supermarket and GUYOIL have always been supporters of sport and its development in Guyana. They also welcomed Akbar Auto Sales and urged the company to continue such support since this is their first contribution to boxing.
Abdool added that the support the Board has received is vital to the sport for survival and development.
Brand Manager of GUYOIL Leonard Khan and Accounting Supervisor and Marketing Executive of Nigel’s Supermarket Christopher Franklin emphasized that they have always been supportive of sports and more particularly boxing in Guyana.
Franklin added that the proprietor of Nigel’s Supermarket Nigel Johnson is happy to be a part of the ‘Caribbean Fury’ card since he is a sport enthusiast.
Meanwhile, on the card will be local bantamweight champ Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore taking on former five-time world champion Mauricio Pastrana and former bantamweight title holder Dexter Marques fighting Hewley Robertson.
The ‘Battersea Bomber’ Howard Eastman, former European, Commonwealth champion and current national middleweight champion, will take on World Boxing Empire (WBE) champion Kevin Placid, who is also a police officer in Trinidad & Tobago (T&T).
Guyana’s heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers, who finally got an opponent to go up against him in the ring, will challenge debutant Dexter Collins.
To complete the six-fight card, the promising Paul Lewis Jr., after enjoying success in the amateur ranks, will duke it out with Shawn Pile while national welterweight champion Iwan Azore is scheduled to contest the stubborn Wayne Briggs who has boasted that no boxer can put him down.
