West Indies middle order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has been named in the Demerara squad to contest the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Senior Four-Day competition which bowls off next Tuesday.
Sarwan is one of the senior West Indies players currently being sidelined by the bitter contract impasse between West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and West Indies Players Association (WIPA). Last weekend he took six wickets for 13 runs in the Neal and Massy first division 40-over countrywide tournament.
The tournament will be played among four teams.
Apart from teams from the three counties of Berbice, Essequibo and Demerara, a Rest teams to be made up of the standby players from the three counties has been added to the competition.
At a recent press conference of the GCB, president Chetram Singh stated that this move was an effort to add a more competitive edge to the competition.
The prolific right hand batsman Sarwan, last played in the President’s Premier League captaining the President’s XI side. He made scores of three and zero and no doubt will be looking forward to get some match practice if he should be chosen for the end-of-year tour to Australia and more particularly help Demerara to win the title.
The stylish and in-form Everest Cricket Club’s opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika, who hit an authoritative 150 against Guyana National Industrial Corpor-ation (GNIC) in the Cellink three-day final that was recently concluded has also been named in the squad.
The Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) selectors have also chosen the Malteenoes Sports Club opener Shemroy Barrington and Demerara Cricket Club’s live wire batsman Christopher Barnwell while Georgetown Cricket Club’s (GCC) and former West Indies one-day player Leon Johnson will bolster the batting lineup.
National wicketkeeper Derwin Christian has been relegated to the ranks of the standby and the younger prospect of Joseph Perry from Everest chosen instead. Leon Scott, after returning from Scotland to correct a chronic back problem, is also named in the squad.
A captain is expected to be named soon.
