Krystal Sukra and Daniel Lopes were the winners of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) 14-and-under tennis tournament held over the weekend at Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel tennis courts.
In the final Lopes sped his way through the set to defeat Michael Munroe 6-1. It did not take Sukra much time to put away her opponent Nicola Ramdyhan, 6-2 in the girls final.
In the semi-final, Seanden David Longe was shown the exit by Daniel Lopes in a set concluding 6-1, while Munroe made it to the final round due to Gavin Lewis pulling out of the tournament after suffering a wrist injury.
The girls semi-final round saw Sukra defeat Aretha Dey 6-0 and Nicola Ramdyhan win against Africa Gentle, 6-2. Tournaments like these have been put in place to cater for tennis players who are not taking part in any international competition. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) suggested that the GLTA host several such matches between major tournaments to keep athletes in competitive mode throughout the year.
The 18-and-under boys and girls competition is expected to commence this weekend at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel tennis courts.
