No ‘Uno’ for GABBFF Mr. Guyana championships

The Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBF) will be hosting its annual senior championships on Sunday at the National Cultural Centre but the reigning overall champion Mark Anthony ‘Uno’ Perry would not be participating.

Perry is said to be quite a massive bodybuilder and he always turns heads with his bulky structure.

Since coming on the local scene last year, Anthony swept away his competitors  at the inaugural Hugh Ross Classic and continued his winning ways last year at Banks Thirst Park for the 2008 Mr. Guyana title.

‘Uno’ told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he would not be taking part because he is not prepared for the show.

“Me, I always look good, I always stay fit and working out, but I’m not prepared for this show, I got married on August 1 and I not too long came back from Antigua but I don’t have a sponsor like last year which makes it hard for me to go on stage…but I’m really sorry,” Perry said.

He said further: “I’m a big dude and I eat a lot all the time even though I’m not training for a show, I like to stay looking really good. But I like when I step on stage, people say ‘dam, who is that guy, he looks good, or dam Perry/Uno has gotten bigger’, so I want to look my very, very, very best every single time I step on stage.”

At an average Perry says he spends about $200,000 to prepare for a show and last year he was aided by the distributors of the Raga Man, Roots and Iron Man Product but this time around he is too financially strapped to make the journey.

“You know I’m really sorry to disappoint my fans, I have a lot of people both in Linden and Georgetown who look forward to seeing me on stage.  I love being on the stage but this time, I can’t make it, I had too many things to do so it took up my time. I’m a family man now, I have a wife and so on to take care of, so without sponsorship it’s impossible for me,” said the reigning Mr. Guyana.

Meanwhile, the senior championships are said to be a selection criteria for team Guyana to this year’s CAC championships and to this ‘Uno’ is hoping that the GABBFF would still afford him the opportunity to represent Guyana.

“Last year it was a whole mix up and I didn’t get to go. It was hard cause I put in a lot, but now I would love for them to still consider me because like I said I always work out and if they can assist me in terms of my supplement would be great…I always dream of representing Guyana and I hope they can make it come through this year,” Perry said.
