Prime Minister Samuel Hinds led a delegation of stakeholders to Ituni to discuss providing the community with 24-hour electricity supply to allow residents to embark on a number of income-generating initiatives.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, currently residents get electricity at a monthly cost of $15,000 for power supplied from a generator. Government provides 500 gallons fuel per month.
However, for power to be supplied all day additional generators along with 900,000 more gallons of fuel will be needed. The Prime Minister said it will be necessary to install meters in houses to facilitate the venture. He also reminded residents that they would need to pay bills on time.
Hinds said too several other communities including Moraikobai, were already on a waiting list for the same type of service. He said residents would need to conserve electricity once the 24-hour service has been installed.
The initiative is being instituted on a trial basis and it is expected that by October 1 actual installations would start.
Under the new arrangement residents will be given the first 15 kilowatt hours free.
Hinds noted the added benefit the service would provide to the health centre, library and other facilities. After the meeting at the Ituni Primary School, Hinds visited the site for the new generator, GINA said.
Ituni is located about 36 miles from Linden.
