Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) scored a 3-1 win over Carib Degenerates to bounce back into contention for championship honours while Old Fort went down to Hikers as play continued in the John Fernandes men’s second division hockey tournament on Friday.
GCC, who had beaten Degenerates 7-1 in their first round encounter, found much more worthy opponents Friday afternoon at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground in Queenstown before eventually winning handsomely to keep their hopes alive in the competition.
The Bourda side took the lead in the seventh minute from a field goal scored by Eric Hing as Degenerates struggled to have 11 players on the field.
Trevon Smith netted GCC’s second goal from a rebound off the goalkeeping pads of Degenerates custodian Brian Cumberbatch in the ninth minute.
Degenerates regrouped and kept their opponents at bay and also forced several counter-attacking plays during the first half.
A seesaw battled ensued in the second half but it was Degenerates who found the back of the net through Timothy Jonas of a penalty corner in the 46th minute.
GCC scored their third goal almost on the stroke of the final whistle when Patrick Edghill made an effective run and fired home a powerful shot that beat an outstretched Cumberbatch.
Over at Bourda, first round leaders Old Fort found the going touch against an ebullient Hikers side.
Robert France netted a double while Randy Hope scored the other for Hikers while Jason DSantos converted for Old Fort.
France sent his team in the lead early in the first half but DaSantos equalized for Old Fort after he converted a penalty flick.
France pushed Hikers further into the lead before Randy Hope put the issue beyond doubt.
The tournament continues today with two more second round matches.
