Timothy Joel Satrohan, who leased his car to a man purported to be an Anguillan named only “Walter” for what was supposed to be three days, is now asking whether you have seen his car.
Satrohan leased the car, a white AT192 Carina motorcar, PJJ 7524, on Thursday last at his Edinburgh Village home, where hire car driver Deodat Persaud alias ‘Crabie,’ took the unknown man. Persaud told Stabroek News that he was motoring along Main Street and Coburg Street in New Amsterdam, when a man stopped his vehicle.
Persaud said that when he asked the man his destination, the passenger explained that he was looking for a car to rent, having been unsuccessful at several car rental outlets. The traveller claimed to be on vacation here, having travelled from Anguilla. He also claimed he was a guest at a hotel near to where he stopped the motor car.
Persaud later contacted fellow villager, Satrohan and although he said he had never engaged in such a transaction before, he willingly agreed to the deal as he needed the money because the reopening of school and other needs of his wife and family.
“Walter” then paid him $18,000, representing the three days rental fee. They also agreed that “Walter” would contact Satrohan thrice daily. Satrohan said he initiated the first call and that was the only time contact was made with the suspected car thief. Afterwards, the calls went to voicemail, he recounted.
Satrohan, who is also a seaman, said he is the first owner of the four-and-a-half-year-old car.
Describing it, he said it has the word’ Carina’ written in black at the two sides of automobile, while the back windscreen has a bible with clasped hands, with the word, ‘Peace’ inscribed. “Virgo” is inscribed on the front windscreen.
