– suspected victim of hit and run
A 37-year-old motorcyclist, suspected to have been the victim of a hit and run accident, was discovered dead along the Farm Public Road, East Bank Demerara early yesterday morning.
Rohee Mahan of Howes Street, Charlestown, George-town left his home on Sunday to visit his brother at Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara. Mahan reportedly left Diamond some time around 8 pm on Sunday to return home. He is suspected to have been struck down some time between 8.15 pm and 9 pm while riding along the stretch of road.
Mahan’s body was discovered shortly before 7 am yesterday by a security guard who works in the area. Stabroek News understands that the man’s motorcycle was found a short distance away from his body on the western side of the road.
Randy Mahan told Stabroek News yesterday afternoon that he suspects his older brother was the victim of a hit and run. According to Randy, fragments of glass belonging to another vehicle were found at the scene of the accident. He also pointed out that Rohee Mahan’s body was found just outside a man’s home but that person had heard nothing strange on Sunday night.
Police, he said, are investigating the matter but are “clueless”.
Their brother who lives in Diamond New Scheme was on his way to Georgetown yesterday morning, Randy explained, and decided to stop at Farm to see what the crowd was about. “My other brother got the shock of his life this morning [yesterday],” Randy said. “He was on his way to town and stopped to see what the crowd was about at farm and he saw Rohee lying there dead. He was the one who called me to break the news.”
Randy said he was making his mother some coffee some time around 8 am yesterday when they got the news of Rohee Mahan’s death. The young man said he was forced to keep the news from his mother as she suffers with asthma.
When Stabroek News visited the scene shortly after 9 am yesterday the man’s body had already been removed and taken to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour. The man, in front whose premises Mahan’s body was discovered, said that he didn’t realize anything had happened until he saw the crowd outside his house yesterday morning.
“I didn’t hear anything strange and I didn’t see anything,” the man told Stabroek News. “Is not until this morning when I hear the commotion out hear that I realize they found a man’s body out here.”
Randy said he found it strange that persons around the area would not have seen or heard anything. He insists that his brother was hit from his motorcycle by another vehicle and the impact would’ve made a loud sound and someone should have heard.
“I am not mad at the driver who did this to my brother,” the distressed brother said. “I am not angry or anything like that because I am too sad to feel anything else… My brother was a good man, the best child for my mother and now he’s not here with us.”
