Guyana’s race walk champion Rudolph Mitchell secured his 102nd consecutive victory when he dominated the field in Sunday’s event in East Berbice which was organized by overseas-based Guyanese Winston Felix in association with the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC).
The event was sponsored by Managing Director of Bacchus Mining Company, Royston Bacchus.
According to a release, the 47-year-old Lindener led the competition throughout to chalk up an easy victory.
Twenty-five competitors including several from New Amsterdam and other communities in East Berbice walked from the High Bridge in New Amsterdam to the finish line at Rose Hall Community Centre at Canje.
Sixteen-year-old Andre Stephens of New Amsterdam was the runner- up while Jeremy Cornelius took the third spot in the five-mile event.
Joann Stewart of New Amsterdam took the top position in the junior category with his brother James Stewart in the second spot while Glayson Ralph was third. Donna Ramkissoon of Soesdyke won in the female division ahead of Roshel Reid also of Soesdyke.
Trophies and cash incentives were donated by Royston Bacchus. The release also stated that Regional Education Officer of Region Six Shafiren Bhagan who deputized for the Regional Chairman Z. Mustapha said that the Regional Administration of Region Six is committed to the development of sports and will leave no stone unturned to fulfill that objective.
Overseas-based Berbician Felix who organised the event pointed out that race walking is an inexpensive and healthy sport which should be encouraged and developed in all regions of the country.
