Fire of unknown origin last evening partially destroyed a stall adjoining the Bourda Market along Orange Walk leaving its stallholder contemplating her next move.
Nearby stallholders and passersby were praised for their efforts in containing the fire before the arrival of members of the Guyana Fire Service.
When Stabroek News arrived at the scene shortly after 9 pm, fire fighters were already in control of the fire as a large crowd gathered nearby. Owner of the stall, Carol Trim recounted that she was in the Stabroek Market area when she got a call, the caller on the other end informing her that her Stall 7, Bourda Market dry goods place of business was on fire. The distraught woman said that she had only returned from Issano in the Mazaruni area this afternoon, where she travelled from since last Tuesday. She said her daughter closed the stall shortly after 5 pm yesterday then left to meet her at Stabroek Market. The woman sells mainly party supplies, confectionaries and cosmetics at the stall.
The owner of the stall next to Trim’s told Stabroek News that he was sitting in front of his stall chatting with his friends when he heard an explosion in his neighbour’s stall.
He said shortly after he saw smoke emanating from Trim’s stall and a bucket brigade was immediately mobilized. The man said that he and his friends grabbed whatever they could find to contain the blaze noting that water was sourced from the nearby drains. He said the fire started as a “little thing”, but was ignited further when the doors around the stall were broken down.
The man noted that the efforts of the bucket brigade saved the stall from being completely destroyed, adding that had the fire ignited more, the “entire Bourda Market would have been reduced to rubble”. Other eyewitnesses voiced similar views, noting that the wooded parts of Bourda Market would have fuelled a major calamity.
“Is the bucket brigade save the market,” said an eyewitness who told Stabroek News that he was on his way home after purchasing vegetables at the market when he saw a bucket brigade attempting to contain the fire, and he quickly joined in.
At the scene of the fire last night was Trim’s dog who according to persons at the scene, was in the damaged structure when the fire started. They said the dog started to bark loudly as ‘Good Samaritans’ broke down the stall’s door to contain the fire. The wet but uninjured dog stood idly by as persons at the scene gathered to get a glimpse of the animal.
